Puppies

Puppies: Every 3–4 Weeks Until 16 Weeks Old

Puppies need a series of vaccines starting at 6–8 weeks and continuing every 3–4 weeks until they reach 16 weeks. This is not optional — each visit builds on the last, and gaps in the schedule can leave your puppy unprotected.

After the puppy series is complete, your vet will put you on an annual schedule. Many vets also recommend a 6-month check-in after vaccines are complete.

Adult Dogs

Adult Dogs: Once a Year, Minimum

Healthy adult dogs (ages 1–7) should see a vet at least once a year for a wellness exam, vaccine updates, and heartworm testing. In Florida, heartworm prevention is year-round — not seasonal — because mosquitoes never fully disappear.

Some vets in Tampa recommend twice-yearly visits for dogs with known health conditions, or dogs that spend a lot of time outdoors.

Senior Dogs

Senior Dogs: Twice a Year After Age 7

Age 7 is the general threshold for "senior" in dogs, though large breeds age faster. Twice-yearly visits allow your vet to catch age-related conditions early — kidney disease, arthritis, dental disease, and cognitive changes all respond better to early intervention.

Blood panels become especially important for seniors — they catch organ function changes that have no visible symptoms.

FAQ

Common Questions

Does my dog need a vet visit every year?

At minimum, yes. Annual wellness exams catch things you can't see — dental disease, early organ changes, weight trends, and vaccine updates. In Florida, more frequent heartworm testing is often recommended.

How often do senior dogs need vet visits?

Dogs over 7 years old generally benefit from twice-yearly wellness visits. Age-related conditions like arthritis, kidney disease, and cognitive decline progress faster than in younger dogs.

Are puppy vet visits really every 3–4 weeks?

Yes, during the core vaccine series (8–16 weeks), puppies need visits every 3–4 weeks. After that, annual visits until they're classified as seniors around age 7.
